My Glacier Hiking Adventure in Iceland

If there is anything I have always wanted to do, it is going glacier hiking in Iceland. Apart from the immense love I have for glacier hiking, I so much love going on tours, and Iceland is one of the countries I would trade my precious cell phone for, just to visit. I had heard stories, great ones, from people who had previously gone glacier hiking in Iceland, especially when taken on guided hiking tours by professionals.

After much thinking and deliberations, I decided to make a move towards getting my own awesome adventure in Iceland, too (who doesn’t like having great experiences to tell stories about?). I asked everyone I could find and searched every corner of the internet; behold every positive answer I got triangulated to a company, Local Guide, which is located inVatnajokull, Iceland.

I finally took a leap of faith, visited Local Guide’s official website to get more information about their services. I was encouraged to pay for their guided glacier hiking tour program because I was able to verify the authenticity of their services by the numerous testimonies I saw on their website (Did I tell you they offer one of the most affordable Iceland guided hiking tour? Yes, they do!).

Let’s quickly skip to the interesting part. So, the journey to Vatnajokull, Iceland, started. I must commend, Local Guide is really good at what it does; the company is an embodiment of experienced guided glacier guides who pampered me like a baby (LOL) throughout the adventurous glacier tour.

There was never a dull moment, as we moved from an interesting event to another. When we arrived at Local Guide’s base, we didn’t waste much time before we began with the whole fun-filled glacier adventure, starting with a short drive to Falljokull, a neighbouring glacier tongue which descended from the vast Vatnajokull ice cap. I must confess, going glacier hiking with professional guides like Local Guide, will make you get the maximum hiking experience for the little amount you pay.

Okay, back to the adventure.

Our hiking adventure began. We had a half-a-day hiking through glacier moraines and glacier landscape to the tip of the glacier where we were asked to put on our respective crampons and also got ourselves equipped with our axes. If there is anything you could describe as awesome, it is ice climbing. I had this top-of-the-world kind of feelings when we started climbing giant mountains of ice. Finally, we got to the top!

As if that wasn’t enough, we took glacier walks and boom! We reached an ice cave (yes, an ice cave). I had seen some many caves on the TV but I never imagined myself being in one, let alone an ICE CAVE.

After much fun that never seemed like it would end, we retired to Local guide’s base. I could write an encyclopedia of great experiences I got from going on a guided glacier tour with Local Guide, but how will the great story ever continue if you don’t tell yours?

The Local Guide crew is simply the best people you should allow take you on a glacier hiking tour to the Iceland because with them, you get the whole amazing experiences of glacier hiking.
